The following images represent a small, and tiny element of the freedoms we all have in America. As I reviewed a few images, I began to wonder... who controls our public speech in America: federal, local, or the viewer with the final option to see, or hear a message.
At times as I documented a choir or Preacher on Skid Row Los Angeles, some people - had concerns about the affect on the under-empowered homeless. That homeless humans do have rights to complain; or that they had no rights which could stop people from preaching, simply because they were America's poor.
Do rights change just because you are a product of an enclave, Or ,because you are educated and have a deep understanding of politics..?
The other night as I was completing a project in the Pico Union Section of Los Angeles, I was speaking to one 19 year old Mother, and as we spoke freely she continued to "throw up" a clear hand gesture.
Maria felt safe, as she told me how proud she was of President Obama, "yo william he's like la raza, life will be better, that people dont know, but hes real..por la vida, la raza.."
Well, I could read her hand gestures, some call them gang signs, others simply call them a sign of legacy.
What signs of a legacy are not safe, when should all history be freely spoken..?
Free, Safe, or Fair?
