64 years ago today (Aug 6, 1945) America did the unthinkable with it's Atomic Bomb, and killed at least 80,00 humans in Hiroshima Japan:peace
Its early morning 8:15, William just finished a meeting related to new documentary. The street sweepers, little store owners are buzzing about..while, the police in freshly pressed blues..wake the leftover homeless.
Margo: Tell your movie partner... I am ready to go home. That's why you came today right?
They said you were looking for me, I just got out of detox, 20 days in that Mexican detox on 60th and Broadway. Its like jail, the doors close at night, me and 50 men, and one other female. They would have keep me longer, but the other lady got real sick, and the police came, and shut down the center ... Oh I did not know but when you put me on that big screen my life changed..I want to go home now.
Margo continues: Tell her she is my angel, you too but - she saved my life, you too william, but -she made me see myself.
William you always find me, now find my daughter, she is 27 years old, Melody xxxxx.. Check in Hollywood, or Riverside; tell her Margo xxxx... "Tita", wants to come home.
In 2008, the documentary director Alina Skrzeszewska, and William Shepherd first made contact with Ms. Cuba. At that time, she was homeless, and had been on the streets of Los Angeles' skid row for over 10 years. Ms. Cuba's story is not a unique one, and in fact - she is the norm; sexual abuse, drugs, too much drink...broken families and no way out from the "bottoms".
On April 30th 2009, Alina Skrzeszewska's feature documentary "Songs From The Nickel" had its debut at the Walt Disney Concert Hall REDCAT Theater. Prior, Alina asked William "search and find Ms. Cuba and bring her to the screening"
As the movie ends...Ms. Cuba remarks, "I can do it... I'm going to leave skid row"
Theses two phoneCam images of Margo, were taken by William, and given to Ms. Alina Skrzeszewska as a gift..from Margo(Ms. Cuba).
It must be noted that any information regarding Multiculturalism on this site generally represents the collective thoughts from the Directors at Multicultural Brand Consultancy, MBC.
Darn, some of my best culture and branding thoughts are in some way an extension of the months and months of engaging with Mr. Jack Yan during 2008. We were able to dig deep into the cultural matrix of America, and then layer that -- into a global context of sustainable multicultural branding, and insights that will foster engagement on a critical mass scale, locally and globally.
I've practiced both general and ethnic specific branding since the 90's. Yet it was not until the merging of the two, interconnected culturally, did I fully understand the core concept of this Great Americana. Well, historically speaking based on shared experiences, rich legacy roots.
However, it was not the long form historical brand story Jack and I sought.
The query "Who, and What" , and those answers created the foundation of a new brand planning filter for research, story creation, brand activation, and message exposition. It is "branding who we are"
1) Who are Americans?
2) What do we value?
3) What is the role of branding in an era of great consumer segmentation, new migrant-Americans and the country is in an economic meltdown?
4) What are the cultural effects and affects of both post 9/11 fears, and post civil rights strides?
Reviewing the economic and cultural impact when traditionally ethnic communities become multicultural such as Harlem NY, Park Slope Brooklyn, Central City Los Angeles, LA's Little Tokyo.
Wondering if the new residents bring different goals and insights that can be shared and grown in a unified manner. Also considering if that breaks the "ghetto ideology". Are people more inspired to change when they see folks of different ethnic origins strive? Or, does that increase cultural divides...
Correspondingly, can that effect be reproduced in media communications to instill sustainable community and national goals.
Moreover, are corporations more willing to tie-in (brand) to multicultural communities, even if they are poor?
Finally, who owns the encalves' story: current expectations, old assumptions, and historic legacy.
Today I asked an economics guru his thoughts on this subject. He said he would lookout for papers related to this. But, this is all very new. Meaning the coded construct of American multiculturalism. America still has a strict black and white view on what is valued, and who are Americans.
